meta
trash… it’s littering my life.
I’ve been questioning my/our reliance on monolithic tech. And it feels right not to overconsume. At least for me, all I want to do is pick up litter and maybe share my stories along the way. I don’t need to “make it,” on a grand scale, receive global attention, or garner a lot of “likes” with this intention. But there is a strange paradox at play.
And I've become reliant on these new technologies and on social media. I even recently began to embrace Instagram again, excited to share my passion for a good cause. The truth is, I don’t need Meta to share my passion. Meta would like us to believe it’s a necessity… and it is, if you want to be a certain kind of successful; I understand this. This is the paradox.
The truth is, while I can’t avoid the use of digital technologies in my life (my 8-5 job dictates this and pays the bills), I am still going to make an effort to minimize my use and reliance on these things. Yes, here I am, typing away at a keyboard, on a laptop, using the Internet, using SquareSpace, etc. But I can still moderate my use.
I am a social creature. Most social creatures have a need or desire to be seen and heard. Big tech has utilized this human vulnerability on a massive scale and we are caught in their nets, while trapped along with our own overconsumption. I don’t want to inadvertently support Meta CEOs and egos. The marriage of politicians and corporate demigods is alarming.
Perhaps there is a need/desire to be seen and heard. But the world is noisy with all things Meta.
In the end, look at what Meta is doing and ask if it is truly helping or hindering our overall being; more positive action or merely distraction? Do what you do because you love to; do what you do because it’s the right thing to do.
How else can we communicate?
If the present holds no audience, and the future shows no interest, at least integrity can guide our intentions.
